Paragraph Writing - Cultural Appreciation

Over the last couple of weeks we have been celebrating our cultures, whether it be through our song and dance for Fiafia, or the work done for Samoan Language week, celebrating cultures is a rich and wonderful experience for us all.

Your question is this;


Why do you think it is important for us to celebrate, and share our cultures?

My culture is Tongan Samoan & Pakeha. My Mum is tongan and Pakeha and my Dad is samoan. When I dance for a wedding, a birthday or something really important I do a tau'olunga or a Siva Samoa. I Mostly do a talounga every time. I only did 1 samoan siva dance which was for a wedding. i can't really speak in tongan and samoan only a little bit because I was born in New Zealand.


When I do a tau'olunga, what I wear is wrapped around a dress either from ngatu with a traditional designed mat. Handwoven pandanus leaves and a piece of cloth covered with green leaves fragrant flowers or shells any shiny piece of cloth decorated with sewn on traditional patterns. 


When I do Siva Samoa The traditional ladies clothing is called puletasi which is a matching skirt and tunic with samoan designs. The lava lava is a sarong which is worn by men or women. They are of different patterns and colours but tend to be plain for men who may wear it as part of an official uniform.


My Favorite food in tonga is Otaika Lou Otai pig and horse and for dessert my favorite is Pangi Keke. 

My favorite food in Samoa is Sapasui palusami and for dessert Pani PoPo 


 The Traditional food for tonga is Pork Chicken Beef Sheep ribs and Fish lobster octopus steamed pork suckling pig. Tongan Traditional drink is Otai. There is Pineapple otai mango watermelon otai and other ota’s 


The Traditional food for Samoa is  Green Banana Taro Sapasui Samoan Chop suey pisupo Povi masima Mutton flaps turkey tails Palusami/lu’au. 


Fun Facts about my cultures:


  1. Tonga is the only kingdom in the Pacific since Taufa'ahau King George in 1875 declared Tonga a constitutional monarchy; he also gave Tonga its first constitution.


  1. Tonga is the only Pacific Island nation never colonised by a foreign power. Uniquely Tonga has also never lost its indigenous governance. After over 1000 years of rule today's monarchy and its structure still remain the most powerful and influential entity in Tonga.


  1. The Pacific island of Tonga is the most obese country in the world. Up to 40% of the population is thought to have type 2 diabetes and life expectancy is falling. 


  1. Samoa is located in the pacific ocean south of the equator samoa consists of two main islands called savaii  and upolu and several smaller island and islets. 


  1. The samoa island was settled some 3,500 years ago as part of the austronesian expansion both samoa’s early history and it more recent history are strongly connected to the histories of tonga fiji nearby islands which samoa has long had genealogical links as well as shared cultural traditions. 


  1. Samoan traditions hold the view that Tagaloa-alagi created the world and the Samoan people out of the earth, hence their name Samoa.
